Chapter Two

Eadie took a deep breath, feeling the tension mixed with excitement as she decided to follow her heart. Despite her vow to avoid romance for a year, the allure of Kenji's charm was irresistible. They left the gallery discreetly and made their way to Kenji’s studio.

The streets of Tokyo seemed alive as they walked side by side, a symphony of distant chatter and neon reflections on rain-slicked pavements. Kenji was captivating—a man whose artistic spirit seemed to resonate with her own.

Upon reaching the studio, Kenji unlocked the door, revealing a space alive with creativity. Unfinished canvases lined the weathered walls, bathing in the soft glow of vintage lamps. Eadie felt an immediate connection to the space, its quiet hum of inspiration enveloping her.

Kenji moved gracefully, offering her a glass of wine, his conversation an effortless blend of art and philosophy. Yet, beneath his charming exterior, Eadie sensed a shadow, a flicker of something unresolved.

Her instincts, honed through years of untangling emotions, whispered of caution. As they spoke, a stack of letters neatly tied together with twine, sitting atop Kenji’s disorganised desk caught her eye—each envelope bearing the same elegant handwriting, all marked 'Return to Sender.'

Kenji noticed her gaze, his demeanour shifting almost imperceptibly. The warmth in his eyes seemed to dim, replaced by a guardedness that piqued her curiosity.

“Old correspondence,” he said lightly, but his voice held an edge that belied his nonchalance.

Kenji’s phone rang. He viewed the incoming caller and looked to Eadie apologetically. “I’m sorry, I have to take this call. Why don’t you make yourself comfortable on the sofa. I won’t be long at all.” He then left the studio space and climbed a dimly lit internal stairwell leading to the floor above.

Eadie’s mind raced, questions forming as she gazed at the letters. Was Kenji’s allure masking a hidden past? The shadow lingered, leaving Eadie at the edge of a moral precipice. Who were those letters intended for, and why did Eadie feel uneasy about them?

To Eadie’s surprise, her instincts took over and she carefully slid the top envelope from the pile and placed it in her handbag. She returned to the sofa, alert and not at ease with her actions. What would she do with it? Surely, she couldn’t invade his privacy and read it? Would he notice it was gone? Why was her curiosity so strong and invested?

She could hear Kenji’s footsteps from upstairs, returning back down to the studio. She had to think quickly. He would be back down in a matter of seconds.

Should Eadie keep the letter and read it, or should she return it to the pile and ignore her overwhelming need to know more?
